A mix from around the world

So far, most of the mixes I've done have been pretty UK- and US-centric.

Thats due in a large part to the records that I have been able to find locally, here in Australia, where almost all of the media we seem to import has been - and continues to be - from those countries.

However, finding records from other parts of the world has always held a particular thrill for me. One of the things I love about looking for records in general is stumbling on something I know nothing about, so when the record is from somewhere a bit more exotic than what i'm used to, it only adds to the excitement and intrigue.

And despite Australia's relative closeness to Asia, it's not that common to come across records from the region, and even less often anything that actually looks interesting. I'm more likely to find records from parts of Europe like France, Hungary, or Italy.

Of course, this set of tracks doesn't represent anything like a truly international collection (there is nothing here from Africa for example), but does represent a decent cross-section of what I've been able to find and acquire over the years.

The mix...

We kick things off in the mid-60s with some garagey-fuzz from Lebanon (sung in Armenian), and end up in Italy in the early 70s getting a bit funky with Mina.

Along the way we go on a bit of a world tour, including 'Poo Yailee', a vocal take on 'Green Onions' sung in Thai by American Louise Kennedy, a Singapore band called The Steps doing their take on 'Buzzsaw', and Filipino group Joe Cruz and The Cruzettes excellent, uptempo, version of Earth, Wind & Fire's 'Help Somebody'.

It's worth mentioning that quite a few of the records here are in less than pristine condition, but that's a reflection of what I've been able to find! While a few of the tracks are ones I've bought online, the vast majority have been found 'in the wild'.

Here, there and not quite everywhere
